Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: The hot conditions at the equator warm air and cause it to rise. The warm air travels north at high altitude and descends near 30 degrees latitude. This creates a circulation pattern where surface air flows south from 30 degrees to the equator. This air is not rigidly linked to the Earth, and the Coriolis effect turns the southward flow to the southwest. This air flow to the southwest along low latitudes is known as the trade winds because of its importance to trade during the age of sail.
