Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: Mudflows form when volcanic ash mixes with water, forming a substance similar in appearance to wet concrete. Mudflows are a particular danger on stratovolcanoes, since the steep slopes increase the speed and danger of the flow. Stratovolcanoes covered with snow (as in the Pacific Northwest) are a particular danger since water is available in the form of melted snow, but the water can be generated by volcanic weather as well. Mudflows flow through valleys for a long distance, and towns have been built on the remnants of old mudflows, notably around Mt. Rainier. There is some warning if a mudflow is coming, but the amount of time for evacuation is still short.
