Answer to Question 1

ANSWER: The Hayward Fault is in the San Francisco Bay area, near the cities of Oakland, Berkeley, and Hayward. The fault is dangerous for two main reasons. First, it runs through a heavily populated area endangering significant amounts of life and property. Second, it is overdue for an earthquake, and geologists believe it is ready to break.

Answer to Question 2

ANSWER: The North Anatolia fault experiences migrating earthquakes. This was one of a series of earthquakes that has been traveling along the fault from the east to west. After the Izmit quake, other earthquakes have extended to the west. The major city of Istanbul is at serious risk of experiencing a migrating earthquake if the trend continues.
