Answer to Question 1

Isaac Newton stands out as having made significant contributions to our understanding of why wind blows. He lived from 1642-1727. Two of the most important fundamental laws of motion he proposed were Newton's first and second laws of motion. Newton's first law of motion states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will remain in motion (and travel at a constant velocity along a straight line) as long as no force is exerted on the object. Newton's second law of motion states that the force exerted on an object equals its mass times the acceleration produced.

Answer to Question 2

Atmospheric pressure changes much more quickly when we move upward than it does when we move horizontally. Therefore, even small altitude differences between two observation stations (or barometer measurement sites) can produce large differences in pressure readings. That is why barometer readings must be corrected for altitude. Altitude corrections are made so that readings taken at one station can be compared to readings from another station. Pressure readings are normally adjusted to a level of mean sea level, called the sea-level pressure. The size of the correction depends on how high the station is above sea level.
