Answer to Question 1

Interactions among electrons around atoms can result in two or more atoms joining together. This is know as bonding. Ionic bonding takes place when one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another. This results in both atoms having a full complement of eight electrons in their outer shells. Covalent bonds form between atoms when their electron shells overlap and they share electrons. Bonding is important in the formation of minerals because each mineral is composed of two or more different types of atoms which must be bonded.
