Earthquakes do more damage in places where the population density is high and the structures are not especially well built. Many people are killed by falling buildings and debris. Fire, which often occurs in high population areas, is also a major destructive force and has the potential to kill many people. Some earthquakes cause tsunami, which can wipe out entire coastal cities.
