Answer to Question 1

Answers will vary depending on the students prior knowledge of this subject. Issues
of water supply and demand are not unique to desert cities and towns. For example,
very large cities in any location may struggle to provide high-quality drinking water to
their citizens. Coastal cities may have salt water infi ltrating their aquifers. Cities and
towns relying on surface water must confront fl uctuations in precipitation as well as
contamination of their water sources.

Answer to Question 2

Answers will vary. This question was designed to get students thinking about the
potential environmental consequences of extensive groundwater pumping. Examples
include: damage to the aquifer, lowering of the land surface (subsidence), damage to or
loss of riparian habitats as the water table drops, decrease in water quality, and future
water shortages.
