How might the shape and orientation of the coastline increase or decrease
  the impact of the storm surge? What will be an ideal response?

  question , how frequently do you think major hurricanes aff ect or

Answer to Question 1

The shape and orientation of the coastline can cause the storm surge to spread out over
a broader area, such as when the coastline curves outward or is at an angle to the surge.
However, when the coastline curves inward or the surge strikes the coast head-on, the
surge can become focused and its impact increases.



Answer to Question 2

The calculated probability indicates that New York City experiences a major hurricane
about every 25 years. This agrees fairly well with the chart, which shows fi ve major
hurricanes in 100 years, or one every 20 years.
