Answer to Question 1

C

Answer to Question 2

Friction between wind and the ocean surface generates undulations in the water, called waves. These waves travel in groups called wave trains. A stormy sea can be a generating region for large wave trains, which radiate outward in all directions. In open water, only a slight amount of water is actually advancing in a wave. Instead, wave energy is moving through the flexible medium of water. The water within a wave in the open ocean is transferring energy from molecule to molecule in cyclic undulations called waves of transition (not directly mentioned in Geosystems Core). As water approaches the shoreline and enters shallower water, the orbiting water particles are vertically restricted, causing elliptical, flattened orbits of water particle to form near the bottom. The result is closed-spaced waves, growing in height and steepness until the height exceeds vertical stability and the wave falls in a breaker.
