High pressure ridges typically bend poleward, while low pressure troughs bend equatorward. The pattern of ridges and troughs in the upper-air wind flow is important in sustaining surface cyclonic and anticyclonic circulation. Along ridges, winds slow and converge, along troughs, winds accelerate and diverge. Divergence is important to cyclonic circulation at the surface, while divergence is important to anticyclonic circulation.
