In the Atlantic basin, tropic depressions tend to intensify into tropical storms as they cross the Atlantic toward North and Central America. In general, cyclonic motion begins with slow-moving easterly waves of low pressure in the trade wind belt of the tropics. If the sea-surface temperature exceed 26C, a tropical cyclone may form along the leeward side of the easterly waves.
