Answer to Question 1

a. Advection fog forms when warm, moist air moves over a cool surface.
b. Radiation fog forms when Earth's surface cools rapidly by radiation and a thin layer of air in contact with the ground is cooled below the dew point.
c. Upslope fog forms as humid air moves up a slope, expands, and cools to the dew point.
d. Steam fog forms when cool air moves over warm water and the moisture from the water condenses as it meets the cool air.
e. Frontal fog forms when frontal wedging occurs and warm air is lifted over cool air. If rain forms and the cool air is near its dew point, the rain may evaporate and produce fog. This is also called precipitation fog.
