Bedding is the single most characteristic feature of sedimentary rocks. Beds, separated by bedding planes, are also referred to as strata (layers).

Answer to Question 2

Calcite, silica, and iron oxide are the most common cements. Calcite cement will effervesce (fizz) in contact with dilute hydrochloric acid. Silica is the hardest cement and thus produces the hardest sedimentary rocks. An orange or red color in a sedimentary rock usually means iron oxide is present.
