Answer to Question 1

Some will argue that English should be taught as a second language because it is so important for participation in the global economy. Others will argue that English (or any other foreign language) should be resisted for nationalist reasons. With respect to each country's national language, it is important to consider both national pride, but also one needs to consider the establishment of a lingua franca. This is important because of the significant ethnic diversity
throughout the individual countries. With respect to local languages, some may argue that respecting local languages is important; others may argue that permitting people to speak their local languages will encourage ethnic differences and serve as a centrifugal force.
