The two major advantages are (1) greater control of flooding; and (2) production of hydroelectric power. The disadvantages are (1) displacement of upwards of one million people; (2) threats to several endangered species of flora and fauna; and (3) inundation of many valleys, thereby adversely affecting both tourism and agriculture.
