Answer to Question 1

In general the highest rates of out-migration are found in eastern European countries; currently, Kosovo and Cyprus have the highest rates (1.2 a year); Andorra, Albania, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania are notable. Luxembourg, Monaco, and Switzerland have the highest immigration rates (all over 1 a year).

Answer to Question 2

The availability of diamonds in West Africa (Sierra Leone and Liberia) financed ethnic and political conflicts in the region. The diamond trade is, therefore, often referred to as conflict diamonds. The South African company of DeBeers came to dominate and establish a monopoly on diamond extraction. The company began in South Africa, but expanded globally by the beginning of the 20th C. This dominance was challenged in the 1990s by other diamond producers. Today, a certification process allows consumer to know that the diamonds were extracted through legitimate means, rather than by groups using the diamond money to buy arms and support violent conflict in the region.
