Answer to Question 1

Answer: Scenario A could involve the removal of fine-grained sediments (silt and sand) from the surface by deflation. The concentration of larger, coarse-grained particles increases until the fine-grained sediments are completely removed. Scenario B might involve fine-grained particles sifting and working their way between open pore spaces by wind and rainwater infiltration. Over time, silt continues to accumulate and lifts the coarser particles, creating desert pavement.
