Answer to Question 1

Former slaves who escaped their captors established communities free from colonial rule, utilizing cultural traditions from their African homeland. These societies were generally located far off the beaten path (hence our modern day use of the term marooned). These societies provided a means to protect African culture in the Caribbean.
