Answer to Question 1

The Haitian city of Port-au-Prince sits very near the Enriquillo fault line and was very close to the epicenter of this earthquake. As a result the densely settled and extremely poor capital city was impacted severely. Haiti's earthquake was extra devastating because of the poor construction of buildings. Following the earthquake the population had even less access to water and sanitation, which led to additional deaths as disease spread.
