Answer to Question 1

Answer: B

Answer to Question 2

Over the course of the 1800s, the Chinese Empire failed to keep up with Europe. By the late 1800s, Europe and China were trade partners, but Europe disliked the high amounts of silver that the Chinese demanded for their fine silks, tea, and other products, and were equally unhappy about China's unwillingness to purchase European manufactured goods. In response, the British began to sell opium to China, which the Chinese government perceived as a threat. China attacked Britain in 1839 in an effort to stop the opium trade. This Opium War, and one that followed, resulted in victory by the British, who proceeded to take over parts of China. The Russian Empire, to the north, did likewise. By 1900, China was carved into spheres of influence.
