Answer to Question 1

C

Answer to Question 2

Historically, the rugged terrain of the Korean peninsula made it very difficult for outsiders to conquer the region. However, with the advent of improved weaponry in the 1900s, both Japan and China have played a larger role. At the end of World War II, the peninsula was divided at the 38th parallel, with the northern part as a communist dictatorship. Today, South Korea is a capitalist democracy. At the end of 2010, tensions between North and South Korea intensified, with war games by both sides.
