Answer to Question 1

Historically, most of China's energy has come from coal and other dirty resources. Given its large population and its rapid rate of economic development, this strategy was clearly unsustainable. In recent years, China has begun to embrace green energy technology, including wind and solar. This strategy is designed, in part, to avoid environmental damage. In addition, as China implements these technologies, it is learning how to build them domestically, with the idea of increasing their industrial base as they also turn to manufacturing these technologies and selling them on the international market. China has also built the Three Gorges Dam along with other dams as a source of hydroelectric energy.

Answer to Question 2

Due to genetic engineering of crops, there is little biodiversity in cash crops such as rice and corn. This allows pathogens to attack large percentages of a crop population because there is not enough genetic diversity for a pathogen-resistant crop to be in the population. The result of this could be widespread crop losses that could lead to a significant strain on the world's food supply.
