Answer to Question 1

Among the suggested causes for the K-T mass extinction are changes in sea level, meteorite impact, volcanic eruptions, and drastic changes in surface temperature and climate. The impact of a large (10 km) meteorite is the favored theory today because that explanation has had confirmation of a number of predictions, including the presence of a worldwide iridium anomaly, significant extinctions on the land surface and in the oceans, the presence of shock quartz, the prevalence of charcoal, the presence of sand-sized spherules, and perhaps most importantly, the discovery of a large impact basin that corresponds to the timing of the extinction.
