Answer to Question 1

A

Answer to Question 2

The major causes are the expansion of agriculture, ranching, settlements, and commercial logging. Unlike Southeast Asian forests, where hardwood extraction drives forest clearance, Latin American forests are usually viewed as agricultural frontiers that state governments may divide in an attempt to appease landless peasants or reward political cronies. In effect, forests in Latin America are viewed as barriers to economic growth, as opposed to resources to be exploited.
