At some point during their evolutionary history, a eukaryote enveloped an oxygenic cyanobacterium without killing the cyanobacterium. The result was a eukaryotic cell structure with a photosynthesizing organelle called a chloroplast. The process is termed endosymbiosis. The evidence for this endosybiotic event comes from the close genetic relationship between chloroplasts and cyanobacteria.
