In general, continental climates have hot summers and cold winters; they exhibit stark temperature extremes; and there is often a distinct seasonality to precipitation patterns. Maritime climates are generally milder, with less temperature extremes. The cause is primarily due to the continentality of the formerthese areas are located far beyond the moderating influences of the ocean.
