In some countries, such as the Lao People's Democratic Republic, significant foreign investment from China has facilitated the construction of new roads and, in turn, a relocation of settlements. Likewise, this investment and improvement in infrastructure has re-structured the economy of Laos, and has integrated the country more deeply into the global economy.
