Answer to Question 1

Cultural imperialism is the imposition of the culture of an outside group on a smaller, less powerful group of people. The spread of consumer culture around the world is an example of cultural imperialism. Cultural imperialism may stimulate cultural nationalism or marginalization among the smaller, less powerful groups.

Answer to Question 2

A lingua franca is a language that different groups of speakers use to communicate; they may
agree on a third language to serve as a common tongue; it may actually be a formal language
used by one of the groups or from an external area or it can be a patchwork or simplified version
of a standard language. Swahili in East Africa is one example; French was a diplomatic language
and English is a common international language.
