Answer to Question 1

The UN measures the relative position of women to men in terms of employment, empowerment, and reproductive health (maternal mortality and adolescent fertility). Countries are ranked from 0 to 1, 1 being the highest level of gender inequity. Sometimes a country may have a reasonably high HDI, which is a positive, but may also have a relatively high gender inequity score (such as the case in Saudi Arabia). This may occur when a country is wealthy, perhaps due to a particular resource, and is able to convey many social benefits to its citizens, but at the same time a conservative culture may produce a high gender inequality rating.
