Israel was created in the aftermath of WWII as a homeland for Jewish people who had survived the Holocaust during that war. Since then, there have been several wars between Israel and its neighbors. Currently, there are efforts to try to encourage an agreement that will provide a homeland for Palestinians and security for Israel.
