Answer to Question 1

Answer: Platelike ice crystals larger than about 30 m across tend to align themselves horizontally. If the Sun is slightly above the horizon and behind these crystals, bright spots appear 22 to the right and left of the Sun. These sundogs (or perihelia) often appear as whitish spots in the sky, but sometimes they exhibit color differentiation, with redder colors located on the side of the sundog nearest the sun and the blues and violets located on the outer side.
