Answer to Question 1

Answer: Radar observes the internal cloud conditions by measuring the amount of radiation backscattered by precipitation (both liquid and solid). A transmitter sends out brief pulses of electromagnetic energy with wavelengths on the order of several centimeters. A receiver records the intensity of the echoed pulses (indicative of the number and size of droplets and crystals) and the time elapsed between pulse transmission and return (which indicates the distance to the scattering agent).
