Answer to Question 1

Answer: It is a simple device made by filling a long tube with mercury and then inverting the tube so that the mercury spills into a reservoir. Although the tube is turned over completely, it does not empty. Instead, the air pushes downward on the pool of mercury and forces some of it up into the tube. The greater the air pressure, the higher the column of mercury.
