Carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis, the process by which green plants convert light energy to chemical energy. For many decades, the rate of carbon dioxide input to the atmosphere has exceeded the rate of removal, leading to a global increase in concentration. The increase has occurred mainly because of an increase in anthropogenic combustion and, to a lesser extent, deforestation of large tracts of woodland.
