Answer to Question 1

Answer: Sustainable agriculture is food production that can be continued indefinitely and that limits or even reverses environmental degradation. There are many definitions of what constitutes sustainable agriculture. One definition is provided by U.S. law, which describes sustainable agriculture as an integrated system of plant and animal production that will provide food and sustain the farm economically while also improving the environment and limiting the use of nonrenewable and synthetic resources. Such practices should sustain local soil and water quality, for example, which are necessary for the continued success of the farm and the health of farming communities and consumers. Such a broad definition obviously touches on all aspects of food: production, distribution, commerce, and consumption.
