The CO2 content of the atmosphere as measured at Mauna Loa, Hawaii, is highest in spring and lowest in autumn. Explain this seasonal pattern.

Answer to Question 1

Answer: During the summer carbon is removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis and stored in biomass. During the winter respiration is greater than photosynthesis and carbon is returned to the atmosphere.
