Holophrases are one-word or two-word utterances that carry as much meaning for the child as complete sentences. Their use is part of early language development. As children's development advances, they tend to overgeneralize their speech, such as using doggie to refer to all furry animals, or undergeneralize, such as using kitty to refer to only their kitty. As development further advances the tendency to overgeneralize and undergeneralize gradually disappears.
