An extended definition is a longer and more detailed explanation of a
word or term. The writer might use any of the other modes of development
in an extended definition.

A formal definition explains the meaning of a word or term by assigning it
to the class of items to which it belongs and then explaining how the word
or term differs from other items of that class. A formal definition relates to
classification by assigning the word or term to the class of items to which
it belongs.
