The x in Expectancy x Value theory is important, because anything times zero is zero. So, for example, if expectancy for success is too low, motivation to learn will be low regardless of how much the individual values the task. Similarly, even if expectation for success is high, if the task is viewed as trivial or meaningless, motivation to learn will be low.
