In 1950, 12 percent of all women with children under the age of six were in the labor force; in 1990, 57 percent of all such mothers worked outside the home. By 1990, more than 56 million American women worked, making up 45 percent of the work force, compared with 38 percent in 1970 . By the year 2000, women were expected to represent almost half of the labor force.
