Answer to Question 1

The principle of fossil succession states that fossil assemblages succeed one another through time in a
regular and predictable order and was recognized by William Smith. This principle allows correlation
of rock units, by relative age, from one area to another.

Answer to Question 2

In an undisturbed succession of sedimentary rocks, the oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest is
at the top. This principle, discovered by Nicholas Steno, is the basis for determining relative ages of
strata and their contained fossils.
