Answer to Question 1

Absolute dating provides specific dates for rock units or events in years before present. Most absolute
dating is done by radiometric dating to obtain absolute ages. These are based on the natural decay rates
of radioactive elements present in some rocks

Answer to Question 2

Relative dating places geologic events in a sequential order as determined from their position in the
geologic record. It will not tell us how long ago an event occurred, only when it occurred relative to
other events in the same vicinity.
