Answer to Question 1

Stream piracy occurs when headward erosion cuts through a drainage divide and diverts part of the
drainage of another stream. The pirating stream has more water, greater discharge, and greater
potential to erode and transport; these same properties are decreased in the pirated stream.

Answer to Question 2

A valley starts to erode with a small rill. The rill collects more runoff and becomes deeper and wider,
downcutting when it has more energy than it needs to transport sediment. Lateral erosion, mass
wasting, sheet wash, and headward erosion all contribute to the evolution of valleys.
