Answer to Question 1

A floodway is a channel constructed to divert part of the excess water in a stream around an area
people want excess stream water to avoid. Floodwalls have gates that protect the land and can be
closed when floodwater rises. Reforestation of land reduces flooding potential

Answer to Question 2

Alluvial fans form best on lowlands with adjacent highlands in arid and semiarid regions where little
vegetation stabilizes the slopes. These areas are prone to hard rains that saturate surface materials.
Surface runoff is funneled into a mountain canyon, but when the runoff reaches the base of the
mountain, it quickly spreads out forming a fan-shaped body of alluvium.
