Briefly explain why felsic intrusive rocks are actually more common than mafic intrusive rocks What will be an ideal response?

Why does Bowen's reaction series predict that mafic intrusive rocks should be much more common
  than felsic intrusive rocks? What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

Partial melting of mafic oceanic rocks and silica-rich sediments yields magmas richer in silica than the
original magma. Also, assimilation of continental crust into the magma raises the silica values.



Answer to Question 2

If crystal settling produces the magma, there would need to be about 10 times as much mafic magma
present to yield the amount of felsic rock.
