Answer to Question 1

Mantle plumes are responsible for linear chains of volcanoes in the oceans, as seen in the Hawaii-
Emperor Chain. They are also responsible for flood basalts, vast flat-lying areas of overlapping lava
flows. Hot spots are not related to plate boundaries; most cause intra-plate volcanism.

Answer to Question 2

A mantle plume is a cylindrical plume of hot rock that rises through the mantle, most likely from the
core-mantle boundary. As the rock rises, the pressure on it declines, and the melting temperature of the
rock decreases. Melting begins and creates magma.
