Explain why the ferromagnesian minerals most susceptible to chemical weathering are those formed
early in the continuous branch of Bowen's reaction series. What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are rising due to the burning of fossil fuels. How might this
increased level of carbon dioxide affect rates of weathering? What will be an ideal response?

Answer to Question 1

The minerals that form first in Bowen's reaction series form under the highest temperatures and
pressures, which are least like equilibrium conditions at the surface of Earth. These minerals are most
susceptible to weathering because they are stable at conditions that are the furthest from those found at
the surface.

Answer to Question 2

Increased amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide will increase the amount of carbonic acid that forms
in the atmosphere and result in an increase of chemical weathering.
