The west coast is an active margin of the North American plate; from Northern California northward is
  a convergent margin. The east coast is a passive margin. What will be an ideal response?

Why are there volcanoes on the west coast of North America but not on the east coast? What will be an ideal response?

Because almost all of it occurs below sea level.
