Answer to Question 1

This is an area of human-induced desertification where there is a delicate balance between survival and
disaster. Poor farming and grazing practices in combination with prolonged drought have caused
deterioration of the land. It is the famine resulting from this that has attracted the world's attention.

Answer to Question 2

The Sahel is a region of Africa located south of the Sahara Desert and north of the humid savannah
grasslands.
