Answer to Question 1

Beaver trapper Jedidiah Smith in the early 1800s described millions of acres of wetlands in parts of
the San Joaquin Valley, California. Today only about 5 of the wetlands reported by Smith remain.
Agriculture, urban development and oilfields have replaced the wetlands.

Answer to Question 2

Exploitation was halted due to land mines. These explosives made it dangerous for people to travel
into desert areas
